Dinner Party Talk – Froot Loops

The Washington Post has a very frightening, enlightening article today on what exactly is in Froot Loops. The answer is, um, U.S. regulators aren’t really sure. The FDA has no data on the impact on health of one of its chemical ingredients, 2-methylnaphthalene. Why? The Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 exempted from regulation 62,000 chemicals that were already in commercial use — including 2-methylnaphthalene! (Which according to SpecLab’s Chemical Fact Sheet is “a petroleum-based insecticide that may cause skin irritation.” Yum. “And they smell good too!” Oh, well, you can either watch this Vintage Froot Loop commercial or run out and get yourself a copy of the Academy Award nominated Food, Inc. (One will entertain you, the other will make you rethink what you eat.) Enjoy your dinner.
