Holidays – Columbus Day

He doesn't look very happy for someone who discovered America.

Today is Columbus Day, which commemorates the day Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492 (the same year he sailed the ocean blue.) Here’s some of the history nerd in me: Columbus was Italian, but his voyage was backed by Ferdinand and Isabella, the infamous Spanish monarchs. He also intended to find a new route to China, but his ship got turned around and he ended up in the Bahamas. How I love the History Channel. The day is also about celebrating Italian-American heritage, so you’re obviously going to need to whip up some fettucini alfredo for dinner. Try this low-cal version from Cooking Light. Still creamy, less guilt. Happy Columbus Day!

Dinner Party Talk – For Your Weekend

Here's a plateful of conversation
Stand up to bullies. In the wake of multiple suicides involving teens bullied for being gay, I remind you that hate is a crime. If you know someone being bullied, offer your help or… give them my email. I can tell them how I got my 7th grade bully to stop (and apologize!)
Speaking of bullying: U.S. Intelligence has informed American tourists traveling in Europe to be extra-vigilant because of a heightened possibility of terrorism. Says Jimmy Fallon via Twitter:”…But joke’s on you, terrorists – we can’t afford to go to Europe!”
Speaking of Twitter, Twitter’s CEO announced his resignation after two years on the job. The COO will take over. None of this news was tweeted.
Green House. Obama’s putting solar panels on the White House. Will that help his poll numbers?
No joke. MTV is a handshake away from bringing back its popular candid camera show Punk’d with … Justin Bieber (and his hair) as its new host.
Put down that croissant! Abercrombie and Fitch model Florian Van Bael was told to leave the set of a photo shoot after he was spotted snacking on a croissant. It was an “inappropriate” moment for eating. I’m a writer with a mouthful of 450-cal blueberry muffin as I type.
Attention Christmas shoppers! You have 75 days to Ho Ho Ho and, just so you know, “Silent Night” and other religious songs will remain off the program at many school holiday concerts after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a New Jersey school’s ban on religious holiday music. That makes me want to make some hot chocolate and go caroling.
By the way, my photo is by Cal Crary. Now, eat your dinner!

American icons – Diamond Barbie

For the girl who has it all (and an extra half million)

In my book Garage Sale America, I tell about the birth of Barbie Millicent Roberts. Originally, sold for $3, the highest priced “Barbie #1” sold to date is $17,091 in 2006 at Christie’s London. But I might have to revise that in future versions because Barbie is getting ready to smash that record when Christie’s New York auctions jewelry designer Stefano Canturi’s custom designed Barbie wearing a rare 1-carat pink diamond on October 20th. According to USA TODAY, pre-auction estimates are $300,000 to $500,000. All proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in support of breast cancer awareness month. Now, that’s a lot of sparkle.

Life 101 – Overcomplicated Marriage Proposal

Mouse Trap meets marriage proposal.

I’m headed to a wedding this weekend. Seems like many couples think the 10-10-10 date is lucky. Check out this guy’s clever proposal. He obviously played Mouse Trap one too many times as a kid. His Rube Goldberg marriage proposal is about the most complicated thing I’ve ever seen. Marbles, dominoes and pulley systems, oh my! Thank goodness she said yes. What I wonder is, why couldn’t he change out of his University of Florida football tee for the occasion? Oh, geek love.

American Fun – Charo on Wendy Williams

How you doing? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love Wendy Williams. Her show is fresh and fun. And I love me some Charo. I saw her a few years back at the Dutchess County Fair. She was hoofin’ it! Well, this week she brought her unique brand of coochie-coochie to Wendy’s show to launch her new song Sexy Sexy. Go ahead and rip up that AARP card.

American Pets – Peoplewithpets.com

This one's ready to go!

Nothing warms my heart (and Wes’s) more than watching the world become more pet-friendly. A friend told me about this site, People with Pets, where you can search for apartments and homes in your state that allow dogs and cats. They’ve also got some great moving tips and a roommate finder, so you can find a roomie who will love Rover as much as you do. Ready for the cute video overload? For reasons unknown to man, cats just adore moving boxes. And you must watch this Simon’s Cat video. It will make your Tuesday happy.

Household Tips – My Jello Americans

Yes, those are jello teeth. Made with raspberry vodka, sweetened condensed milk and food coloring.

They call themselves “the future of jello shots”, and for my next (grown-up, obviously) party, I’m definitely using some of their ideas. My Jello Americans is a blog run by Maureen and Cory, and they create amazingly creative/fascinating/sometimes creepy jello molds using everyday objects and flavored alcohol. It’s the kind of thing I so wish I’d thought of. I’m thinking some creepy jello shot creatures in honor of Halloween are definitely in order, gals!

Dinner Party Talk – Thrive!

For $799.99 (with coupon) Costco will ship you 84 gallon-sized cans of “top of the line” dehydrated food so you can prepare your basement for Armageddon. I’m not making this up. Shelf Reliance, your “premier source for food storage and emergency preparedness planning,” has created this one year food supply with “everyday menu planning in mind.” Watch the product demo! Included in the long list of delicacies is is 12 cans of Hard White Winter Wheat (44 servings per can), 6 Cans of Dehydrated Potato Chunks (42 servings per can), and 6 Cans of Whole Eggs (236 servings per can). But where’s the dessert?! One other important point: this is one year’s food supply for ONE PERSON. If you have a friend, cut that down to half a year. And if you have a family, well, you have to kick someone out or your time is short. You might want to order 4, which will be shipped in 42 separate boxes…just forget about storing your Christmas ornaments.

American Fun – Wonder Woman returns

I loved Wonder Woman as a kid. I practiced her spin on a daily basis, hoping each time I too might magically transform into a superhero with a well-equipped costume. I repeated the act this morning in my New York City living room. Still just made me dizzy.
Anyway, David E. Kelley, creator of Ally McBeal and The Practice, is developing a new series about the female superhero. He’s got his work cut out for him. The gorgeous Lynda Carter definitely left some big boots to fill.

American Fun – Free!

One of the things that makes a city great, is its activities that are free and open to the public. Over the weekend, I took advantage of NYC’s kayaking program. Run by a dynamo group of volunteers, The Downtown Boathouse gives New Yorkers free access to our harbors, and in a space-constrained city…what could be better?! I’ve been jogging past the 72nd Street spot all summer and finally dove in. To be in the water looking up at the skyline is spectacular. If you’re not in New York, put it on your free “to do” list when you visit, or…
Check out your town’s free offerings and let me know about the fun. Happy fall.
