Today, let’s celebrate America, the land where now, any two people willing to say “I Do” to good times, bad times, and occasional gassiness–can! This is a great day! My heart is most glad for all the young kids growing up today who will feel the first tingle of young love, realize it’s for someone of the same sex, and know that they can grow up being exactly who they are. The land of the free now officially recognizes what I learned in 2nd grade math… equal = equal. Love is love. After 20 years, I know I feel it for my love. Here’s to that license!
America: Where equal = equal
Life 101 – Courage
Congrats to my gorgeous friend Jodi Kaye who last night received a Courage Award from Voices Against Brain Cancer at The Hammerstein Ballroom. In 2010, Jodi was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. A 17-month course of chemotherapy decreased her tumor by 40%, and increased her spirit and determination by 4000%! Since her diagnosis, Jodi has completed a half-triathlon, worked as PTA Vice President for her twin’s elementary school and led an effort to adopt a Far Rockaway school flooded by Hurricane Sandy. At the 8th annual fundraising night, the incredible Wailers (Bob Marley’s band!) performed and the food was delicious, but it was Jodi’s emotional speech that brought down the house. She said she wakes up each morning grateful for her life and ever more determined to live it big. I’m lucky to have such a brave friend. She’s an ambassador of hope, strength and positive outlook. To find out more about brain cancer research and perhaps even make a donation to fund scientific research and help families affected by brain disease, visit Voices Against Brain Cancer.

Gossip! – Bruce on the radio
In light of Minnesota joining the cool kids club (!!!) today, listen in to my NPR interview with the wonderful Sarah LaDuke (at left, right after she interviewed Carol Burnett and… me) for The Roundtable. In the interview, she asks a lot of thoughtful questions about my book Moving In: Tales of an Unlicensed Marriage, including if after buying our house and moving to the country, whether we ever had any trouble with anyone criticizing our relationship. You’ll want to hear my answer. I wasn’t taunted about my relationship, but about myself. Don’t worry. I got over it… And there are plenty of laughs… Like my fight last week with Scott over a breath mint.
What I’m Doing – Radio & more
I’m having a good time out promoting Moving In: Tales of an Unlicensed Marriage. And I’m being asked a lot of fun questions. Example: “What’s the silliest thing Scott and you have fought over in the last week?” My answer: a breath mint. Yep. While I was driving, he unwrapped it and stuck it in my mouth along with his dirty fingers. It tasted like minty subway railing.
Anyhoooo, I’ll be on the Roundtable Thursday, May 9 at 11:35 am with Joe Donahue and Sarah LaDuke. (Livestream!) And… I’ll be in Woodstock, NY at The Golden Notebook on Saturday, May 11 at 4 pm. Come! (Say you read this and I’ll give you a free copy of The Bedtime Book for Dogs!) I’ll spin a tale and then you can ASK ME ANYTHING! Oh, and don’t take my word that the book is funny. Read the reviews! Like this one. And the one where it was named a Top Book Worth Reading.
My New Book is OUT!
Let’s get personal! There’s a lot of talk about marriage these days. And about who should and should not be doing it. In my opinion, any two people willing to say I DO through thick, thin, and frequent gassiness, should be committed.
Want a laugh?

Pet Fun – Go Dog Go! Show
Don’t you just love things that celebrate the underdog? I had fun judging the Go Dog Go Show at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center this past weekend. The yearly dog show, presented by Pause Dog Boutique, gives a chance for ALL dogs to be a winner no matter who their mom or dad was. The dogs all seem to enjoy the competition, which includes such categories as “Celebrity Look-a-Like” “Most Mysterious Heritage” and the ever popular dog & two legged friend “I Think I’ve Found My Twin” parade. I’m at left (Photo by Printz Photography) with the winner of the “Bad Hair Day” contest. And, um, I’m noticing a similarity in stylings. Wait a minute… I think I’ve found my twin! Any day gone to the dogs is a day of doggone fun. Woof!
Life 101 – My sweet Pop
I had the joy of having two amazing grandfathers. My PaPa passed away a few years back. He was always looking to have a good time, enjoy every day. He smiled and greeted every person he passed on the street in his small town of Woodruff, South Carolina. I definitely inherited my sense of fun from him. Yesterday, my beloved Pop passed away at the age of 93. (At left, my brother & I surprising him for his 90th birthday). Douglas Bruce was a jewel. I never heard him say a bad word of anyone. Ever. His heart was big, his soul was kind. Hopefully, I will live up to his impeccable standard. It’s a high bar, but I’ll try, Pop, I’ll try.
