Travel – 10 Wackiest Places in USA
I love America. We’ve got hot dogs, apple pie, and some wacky places to visit. TripAdvisor has released their list of the 10 wackiest places in the United States. They include the Leaning Tower of Niles, Illinois; the Mermaid Show at Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida; and the Toilet Seat Museum (pictured at left) in Alamo Heights, Texas. Yep, Barney Smith collects toilet seats and decorates them. His museum now seats more than 1,000. Look here for more wacky vacation sites.
American Fun – Fun with parking
This online game a friend recommended reminds me of my horrific days in Driver’s Ed. Apparently Parking Space 2 has 15 levels, but I could only get through, well, a few. Waste some of your Friday afternoon with this rather frustrating but addicting game! And while we’re on the subject of parking, I just heard about a new Android app that alerts motorists to open parking spaces in their areas. It’s the OpenTable of the parking world, though you can’t reserve yourself a space…yet. Definitely needing a BlackBerry version here!
American Fun – Symphony Season
One of the greatest things about living in or near a city is the easy access to all things cultural. Though the end of the holiday weekend brings some tears (back to school, end of summer, no more sno-cone stands, etc…), fall is the beginning of the symphony season. Tickets are sometimes pricey, but I’ve just discovered the secret to saving some cash: open rehearsals. The New York Philharmonic season begins on September 22 and tickets are $18 each for one of their many open rehearsals. And here’s my favorite piece of all time, Aaron Copland’s Hoedown. I can already feel myself getting more cultured.
American Fun – Zero Views
We watch more than 2 billion YouTube videos a day. We’ve all seen the YouTube’s with 67 million views like David After Dentist. With more than 24 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute of the day, it’s impossible to see it all, particularly the things no one watches! But now we have Zero Views, a blog that mines the dregs of YouTube Pond for the best of the worst. Clever, right? I’ve spent my morning drinking coffee and watching clips like Why, Hello Children and Bored Bros Dancing to the Ding Dong Song and I must say Zero Views is a refreshing morning rush.
Life 101 – Year of Living Biblically
Over the holiday weekend and its sputtering Hurricane Earl, I encamped myself on a couch at the beach and enjoyed a book. Really enjoyed. The Year of Living Biblically, A.J. Jacob’s quest to follow the rules of the Bible for 365 days as literally as possible, is impossible to put down, almost as much as his following all 700 plus of the Bible’s rules. Who knew that in addition to the Bible’s more popular moral laws (honesty, tithing, lust curbing), there are also near-to impossible ones: not mixing wool with linen; not cutting your beard; and killing magicians? He met Samaritans in Israel, snake handlers in Appalachia, Amish in Pennsylvania, and creationists in Kentucky. And the result is a highly enjoyable and enlightening read. A.J., I’m a fan.
American Fun – Chicken Wing Eating Contest
“A battle for the ages. A battle of the titans.” And in my opinion slightly disturbing. This weekend was the National Buffalo Wing Festival (in Buffalo, NY, of course) and its eating contest (sponsored by Pepto Bismol, of course.) Sonya Thomas “The Black Widow” of eating contests beat top professional eater Joey Chestnut by eating 181 chicken wings in 12 minutes. The festival served more than 1/2 million wings.
The question is: How does one become a “professional eater?” I’m putting that on my list of next careers.
Life 101 – First day of school
Last night as I came in from beach party weekend, I ran into two young ladies in the elevator who nervously announced: “Tomorrow is our first day of high school.” The only appropriate response: “Have you picked out your outfit?” They were headed to do that “RIGHT NOW!” Picking out the first day of school outfit was always more important than knowledge! But my quick elevator advice was: “Wear whatever makes you feel the most YOU!” Now in the age of YouTube and Twitter, kids have a unique option. They can try on their options and let the public vote. And here’s a young lady who gives great first day of school hair and style tips for her friend! Oh, modern times.
