Dinner Party Talk – For your weekend
The infestation and hysteria spread: The NYC Nike Store closed because bedbugs, and Illinois declared war with a Bed Bug Summit.
Everyone’s a-Twitter. The president’s press secretary Robert Gibbs tweeted that he was “paging the tech guys” because his “Twitter went haywire.” Seems his Tweets were directing users to Japanese porn sites.
Paris Hilton admitted the coke was hers! and was immediately denied entry into Japan. Apparently, Tweetable porn sites are ok, but American plea-bargains… not so much. She’ll have to sell her smell stateside.
Pimple-popping popularity. The most downloaded application in the iTunes store is the free Pimple Popper game. Think it nostalgic, good practice, or disgusting.
Fall TV Premieres. The Hoff is already voted off Dancing with the Stars; nobody watched the cute guy on Lone Star; and the countdown has begun for the Britney Spears Glee episode. Oh, and Amy Poehler hosts the Saturday Night Live premiere this week with musical sensation Katy Perry, fresh off her role as Elmo’s cleavage-baring love interest on Sesame Street. It’s a must watch!
Music mayhem. Aretha Franklin’s singer son, Eddie, was savagely beaten in Detroit while pumping gas. And a last minute contract made sure Randy Jackson would be the sole original judge on American Idol, sitting next to Jennifer “I’m-looking-for-the-next-Michael-Jackson” Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. But will we watch?
Wow, the Yankees won! Then, lost. Amazes me that baseball is a sport where it’s okay to only hit the ball two or three times out of 10. If a surgeon had a 30% completion rate, he’d be so outta there.
Now, eat your dinner!
American Pets – Surf Dog Competition
Almost 100 talented Cali dogs were at Huntington Beach last weekend for the Second Annual Surf City Surf Dog competition. Many pooches were content to watch from the beach, but there was a brood of talented, athletic dog surfers. 35 dogs were caught “hanging 20“, and what’s better than a bunch of cute dogs surfing for charity? I can’t decide if their four leg advantage outweighs the fact that these surfers are, indeed, dogs.
Parties – Show Hope Event NYC
Show Hope, will kick off their fall season with a fantastic party and silent auction in a fabulous rooftop setting. Founded by a talented bunch of young professionals, including my friend Ian Lane, ShowHope raises money for Hope Lodge NYC, which offers cancer patients and their families free, lodging when their best hope for treatment is away from home. Kudos to Ian and his pals–what’s better than themed cocktails, scintillating conversation and a night of doing good for others? I personally can’t wait to bid on the Costa Rica trip. YOU can bid, even if you can’t attend.
What I’m Doing – Dog Days at Barnard College
After attending the fantastically informative expert panel of Dog Days: A Scientific Look at Man’s Best Friend at Barnard last night, it’s safe to say I’ve got dogs on the brain (though, of course, when do I not?). Did you know that dogs come in the greatest range of shapes and sizes of any vertebrate that ever lived? Or that dogs have an extra nasal organ for sniffing out and processing certain scents? In fact, dogs “see” with their noses, as their eyesight ain’t so hot. Alexandra Horowitz, one of the panelists and a prof at Barnard, explains that’s why dogs like to roll in…ah…smelly stuff. To them, it’s not foul and disgusting–it’s just a richer smell! Does this also explain why dogs eat such strange stuff? It’s not a dirty sock! It’s a tasty scent-filled treat!
Life 101 – First Day of Fall
At exactly 11:09 tonight, the sun crosses the equator, marking the first official moment of fall, or autumnal equinox. In Fall, I always feel as busy as a squirrel. I love corn mazes, hayrides, and leaf peeping. My dog Wes loves the leaves, too, like this happy pooch. Other fall fun: the NYC Marathon (if you call that fun?!), apple picking (that link is my recommendations on Daily Beast!) and old fashioned pecan pie, a sweet Southern treat my grandma used to make me from pecans I picked in her yard. Tell me what YOU’RE looking forward to this fall!
