American Icons – Rockefeller Center Tree

One of my favorite New York traditions is the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. This year’s tree, a 12-ton, 74-foot Norway Spruce, was cut from the Mahopac, NY, backyard of Peter Acton, a New York City firefighter and September 11th first responder. The majestic beauty is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally-friendly LED lights. That’s 5 miles of wire! And you were complaining about the battle with your paltry 300! If you missed it, check out the AP’s highlights reel.

Travel – World’s Largest Aquarium

When I was a kid, cleaning out the aquarium was a task that was dreaded and always a little icky. I can’t even imagine how they keep the 8 million gallons of water at the Georgia Aquarium clean, but they do. In the middle of the holiday rush, this video of the majestic Georgia Aquarium will calm you down. Posted on vimeo by blogger “Still motion” and set to “The Ballad of Winslow Homer” it is quite worth a few moments of your day.

Famous Pets – Toto

Terry and Judy Garland

Welcome to my newest endeavor: a section on famous pets! My first pet to praise is the pup from one of my all-time favorite movies, Toto!
You probably didn’t know that in the classic Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum, Toto was a talking dog, like many of the animals in Oz. Baum never specified Toto’s breed, but said he was “a little black dog, with long, silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose.” Sounds Terrier-like, right? In the 1939 film, Toto was played by a female black Terrier named Terry. Terry was paid $125 a week (more than some of the human actors), and because of her popularity, Terry’s owner officially changed her name to Toto. Oh, I learned all this from Toto’s “autobiography”, I, Toto by Williard Carroll. Do I smell a Christmas present for the dog-lover friend who has everything?

American fun – Santa’s lap

Are you planning on sitting on Santa’s lap at one of the 1,130 malls in America? According to a survey of The Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas, they are sneezed on up to ten times a day; nine out of ten have their glasses yanked or beard pulled every day; and a third of them have had to change clothes after being used as a potty. Oh oh oh! And Ho ho ho here’s Andy Kaufman on the Dating Game talking Santa’s lap!

American Hype – Black Friday

Paris Hilton does Black Friday with a bodyguard.

As of now, we haven’t heard of any of the usual Black Friday horror stories. Maybe because this year, more people than ever stayed home and shopped online, instead of braving the predicted 4 a.m. crowds. Online sales saw a 16 percent spike yesterday, and the amount people spent on a single online order increased 12 percent. But all those people who stayed home and shopped in their underwear missed Joe Jonas, Gwen Stefani and the Hilton sisters, who all hit the streets to bargain hunt. Even people with multi-million record deals and hotel chains can’t resist a bargain at Barney’s.

American Pets – Safety Tips for Thanksgiving

Your dog can wear the turkey, just not eat it.

It’s almost Turkey Day, so let’s review the most important thing you need to remember about your pooch this Thursday: Thanksgiving feasts are people food, not dog food! In fact, Dogster has put together a great list about how to keep your pup healthy and happy on Thanksgiving, and not feeding him turkey and mashed potatoes is numero uno. Turkey skin can upset your dog’s tummy, so if you must give into his begging, make sure it’s just a bit of boneless, skinless meat.

American Fun – Cookie Monster

Sesame Street is getting so clever. Tell me how to get to pop culture mainstream! First, there was that Katy Perry boobie thing, then I hear Lady Gaga is going to do the Muppet movie… and today the Street has posted video of Cookie Monster performing on Saturday Night Live, complete with a monologue, MacGruber, Fake News, and a Monster Gaga performance. If you like it, join the one of the millions who will obviously support the Facebook campaign to let Cookie Monster host. Betty White who?
