Famous Pets – Toto

Terry and Judy Garland

Welcome to my newest endeavor: a section on famous pets! My first pet to praise is the pup from one of my all-time favorite movies, Toto!
You probably didn’t know that in the classic Wizard of Oz books by L. Frank Baum, Toto was a talking dog, like many of the animals in Oz. Baum never specified Toto’s breed, but said he was “a little black dog, with long, silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose.” Sounds Terrier-like, right? In the 1939 film, Toto was played by a female black Terrier named Terry. Terry was paid $125 a week (more than some of the human actors), and because of her popularity, Terry’s owner officially changed her name to Toto. Oh, I learned all this from Toto’s “autobiography”, I, Toto by Williard Carroll. Do I smell a Christmas present for the dog-lover friend who has everything?
