Pop Culture Pop-Up – Conjunction Junction

What's Your Function?

#SchoolhouseRock was created by David McCall, who noticed his kids had a much easier time remembering the lyrics to rock songs than they did keeping track of times tables. The first song, “Three Is a Magic Number,” was written by Bob Dorough, a jazz musician and artist Tom Yohe did the animations. The songs and the short animations were a hugely popular moment in my childhood Saturday morning TV watching schedule. Conjunction Junction is a great piece of vintage TV, but the lessons are still valuable and fun today.
Sing along!

Gossip – Simon Says

"Leave on a high note."
“Goodbye!”
Simon Cowell has announced that this will be his last season of the Paula-less American Idol. Panic ensues! “Who will replace him?” “The show will die.” “It’s the beginning of the end.”
I don’t think it’s that hard to find a snarky guy and put him behind a desk to throw out his comments on humanity. Just ask Andy Rooney. I wonder if Andy will wear a black t-shirt?

History of Fun – Hula Hoops!

#Hula Hoop!

There are few toys simpler or more fun than the Hula Hoop. The Hula Hoop was born in 1957, when an Australian company began manufacturing large wooden rings for sale. The rings quickly caught the attention of Wham-O who began manufacturing the toy in a range of vibrant colors, and the rest is toy history. The current world record for continuous hooping is held by Roxann Rose of the U.S, who went 90 hours in April 1987.
Today, Hula Hoops can be seen circling the hips of the young (a must watch!) and young-at-heart (make sure you watch at the end when grandma neck hula hoops.) And there’s even a Hula Hoop workout and don’t even get me going about the Booty Bump #HulaHoop Trick. Practitioners call it a “natural high” similar to the effects of yoga.
When was the last time you Hula Hooped?

Pop Culture Pop-Up – Weebles

Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down!
WEEBLES WOBBLE
Remember Weebles, the roly-poly toys from the 1970s? Shaped like eggs with a weighted bottom, they wobbled when pushed, but would always right themselves, hence the slogan “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down.” I had numerous sets of Weebles, but my particular favorite was the Weebles circus set. I strongly suspect my mom secretly sold them at a garage sale when I was in college. I’ve officially put them on my “hunt list” for spring #garagesale shopping.

American icons – The Smiley

Use of the internet and “emoticons” have made him (and his various friends and family) ubiquitous these days, but have you ever wondered about the origins of the Smiley Face? He was invented in 1964 by Harvey Ball. A life insurance company had recently gone through a difficult merger and the staff was unhappy with the results. Ball’s advertising firm was brought in to create a “friendship” campaign for the company. It took Ball ten minutes to come up with the design – and he was paid a whopping $45. From there the happy icon has taken on a life of his own, appearing everywhere from t-shirts to finger nails to emails. 🙂 a true American icon. P.S. Studies have shown that those who smile are profoundly more successful-at work and in their relationships. Try your own experiment today: SMILE and see if the world smiles back.

Life 101 – Health Tip

Top Doc Advice:
Was out to dinner last night with Dr. Bill Gray, head of cardiovascular studies at Columbia University Medical Center, and he gave me a #health tip. If you’re having a physical, ask that your blood pressure be taken in both arms. Many nurses and medical technicians only check one arm to save time, but drastically different pressure could be a sign of hypertension or other hidden problems. Get healthy in 2010!

American Fun – Getting Outside

Get outside and enjoy 2010!

The National Wildlife Federation is encouraging families to make a resolution to spend more time outside in 2010. Make the “be out there resolution” and receive the “know, go, and grow” toolkit with facts, fun tips, and tools to help you and your kids get outdoors more. Did you know that today’s kids spend only 4 to 7 minutes outdoors per day? That’s a huge difference from when I grew up and was outside until called in for dinner. The proven benefits of interacting with nature include better eyesight, better fitness (and less fatness), better grades, and lower levels of stress and depression. Get out there, and enjoy 2010!
