History of Fun – Limericks

After nursery rhymes, limericks are often the first poems that kids learn, and with good reason – they’re short, funny, and usually appealingly irreverent. Nobody really knows for sure who wrote the first limerick or why the rhymes share their name with the city in Ireland, but the first examples of limericks as we know them date back to 19th century England. The form itself is probably much older than that, and historians have traced its roots to funny, and often dirty, songs sung in 15th and 16th century pubs. One thing’s for sure: limericks are always a good time, and great for a sure-fire (and sometimes racy!) laugh. There once was a man from Nantucket…

Airstream Living Contest Winner!

#airstream-living-cover.jpg Winner of the “Where you’d love to park an Airstream” contest is Sandy, who wrote:
“why park it anywhere- travel and discover the beauty of the outdoors and well as the people and food of North America. Hit garage sales up and have fun going here and there and not having a care in the world.” Airstreams + garage sales + American sites and food = WINNER! New contest announced tomorrow. And for Airstream aficionados: I’ve been invited to Palm Springs for Modernism Week (February 12 -21) and will be doing several events, including a splashy book signing for “Just Fabulous” on Saturday, Feb. 20th poolside at the chic Ace Hotel surrounded by eight gorgeous Airstreams. They’ll be decked out…. and I will too in an array of vintage swimsuits and jewelry by Silver Trailer’s Kristiana Spaulding. (More details soon.)

Gossip – We are the World Remake

Here’s some chatter: “We Are The World: The Remake” will premiere at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics on February 12th with proceeds going to Haitian relief. The complete list of, um, “singers.” I mean, really, Vince Vaughn?!? In the meantime, here’s Simon Cowell’s Haiti benefit of REM’s “Everybody Hurts”: a fantastic multi-celeb out on February 7 (with, yes, Susan Boyle!) I’ll buy ’em both. You?

Dinner Party Talk – The Oscars

And the Oscar goes to...

It’s that time of year again…awards season! The official Academy Awards nominees were announced this morning, hot on the heels of the Golden Globes and the Grammys. It was an unusual year for movies, and the list of nominees reflects that – two sci-fi movies (Avatar and District 9) are on the list for Best Picture, along with the inspirational but fluffy Sandra Bullock flick The Blind Side. Are you having an Oscar party on March 7th? And who are you rooting for?

Dinner Party Talk – Grammy Glam

Last night the Grammy Awards united current pop queen Lady Gaga with lifetime pop legend Sir Elton John. The performance was glittery, glitzy, and totally amazing, and set the bar high for music’s big night. Beyoncé came out the big winner, taking home six(!) awards, more than any other female artist in history. But I was most happy about my Woodstock neighbor Levon Helm (drummer of The Band) for winning his Grammy after losing his voice to cancer and fighting back! His “Ramble Sessions” at his barn (based on the southern medicine shows of his youth) often features some of the most notable entertainers and musicians of our time. Congrats Levon!
What was your favorite Grammy moment?

American Fun – Groundhog Day!

Tomorrow, people all across the United States (and Canada!) will be eagerly awaiting the meteorological prediction of a certain famous rodent. Punxsutawney Phil also stars alongside Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, in which Murray’s cynical weatherman is forced to live the same February 2nd over and over again. It was always one of my PaPa’s favorites. Let’s all hope that old Phil doesn’t see his shadow this year. I’m cold!

Dinner Party Talk – Parenting

Overheard...

Wife at one end of table: “The scary part of your kids growing up is by the time their teenagers you’ve figured out everything you did wrong.”
Husband at other end: “Have you seen how hot that J-Woww is on Jersey Shore? I’d love to see her in a bar.”

American Icons – Elvis Presley

Elvis would have turned 75 this month. One of my favorite songs was “Hound Dog,” and one of my favorite performances was “>Elvis and the basset hound on the Steve Allen show in 1956. Michael Riedel at the New York Post recently pointed out the performance in an interesting article. I love the legend that is Elvis, but I’m also a fan of Big Mama Thornton.
