#SharkTank is up for renewal – if you want a new season, let ABC know! In the spirit of the show, I’m giving away a signed copy of Use What You’ve Got, the national bestseller I wrote with Barbara Corcoran. Each week, the Sharks choose the best and most viable business plans to invest in. Let’s make our little contest this: Let us know what is the product you use that everyone should know about. Mine is Maas Metal Polish – it works on all metals, and I use it to bring my garage sale finds back to shine like the top of the Chrysler Building. So, what’s the useful product YOU love? Leave your answer in a comment and Barbara will help me choose a winner on March 3rd… and you’ll get a rare doubly signed copy of our book.
American Fun – Bruce at Modernism Week
This week beautiful Palm Springs welcomes Modernism Week – an annual celebration of mid-century design. This year, the fun includes the beloved Airstream trailer and I’ve been invited to do a poolside book signing (surrounded by 8 shiny Airstream!) at the gorgeous Ace Hotel. My friends at Just Fabulous are making sure the party is, well, fabulous! While you’re drinking Atomic Snowcones, I’ll be modeling vintage swimsuits and signing copies of my book, Airstream Living. If you’re in Palm Springs come by, say hello, and have some mid-century fun by the pool!
Dinner Party Talk – Candy Cigarettes
Michael’s is by far one of my favorite stores. I go there all the time to pick up things for my craft addiction, but on my last visit I noticed something strange. They’ve put up new displays of vintage candy (which I would normally love) but one little box on the shelf caught my eye: candy cigarettes. When I was a kid, my mother fought to have these taken off the shelves at Carowinds Theme Park in Charlotte, NC. It’s 2010 – I don’t think selling kids the idea that cigarettes are fun is a good thing. Please let your local Michael’s know.
Dinner Party Talk – Project Runway
New York and much of the east coast is completely snowed in today, and what better way to spend a snow day than to catch up on some great T.V.? This season Project Runway finally returned to its home at the Parsons School of Design, and this crop of aspiring designers is particularly good. All four of the current episodes are up to watch on Lifetime’s web site, but the first is only there until Saturday! Take this snowy day to relax, recoup, and catch up on some great fashion drama. Auf wiedersehen!
American Fun – American Idol
After night one of American Idol’s Hollywood round, Andrew Garcia proved himself the one to beat. Doing his soulful, acoustic version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” was, in my opinion, the most memorable, original opening salvo in Idol history. What a tribute to Paula too. (Even though she says she’s not watching this season, my bet is she was sitting in her bed with whatever cocktail and cheering him on with her over-the-head seal clap. I’m betting on Andy for Top 10. Do you have an early favorite?
Pop Culture Pop-Up – The Muppet Show
I recently stopped by F.A.O. Schwarz and discovered a FUN new section of the store: a make your own Muppet workshop! Why didn’t things like this exist when I was a kid? The furry friends can be ordered online, too. It made me really want a Muppet of my own – and it made me think of how brilliant The Muppet Show was. Stars like Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have moved on to spinoff shows and the big screen, but their hilarious variety show antics from their first gig are the best. Who’s your favorite Muppet?
Gossip – Cindy Adams
The New York Post’s one-of-a-kind treasure Cindy Adams quotes me in her column today. “LIFESTYLE expert Bruce Littlefield announces that the Curl Up & Dye beauty salon, 2188 B’way, curled up and died. Only in New York, kids, only in New York.” I love beauty parlor names and the fun signs associated with them. There’s at least one “Best Little Hairhouse” in every state, and who can pass up “Grateful Head,” “A Cut Above,” and “Headhunters.” I once saw a sign in front of a South Carolina beauty parlor that said: “Don’t put off until tomorrow, you can dye today!” So true. I’m calling my stylist now! Is there a funny parlor in your town you want to share?
