Life 101 – Sleep Fighting

Falling asleep is sometimes darn exhausting isn’t it? Watch this cute tot who is either really tipsy or just plain drunk. Not really. I think he’s trying to get comfortable. And it’s adorable. Too bad when I’m trying to get comfortable at 3 a.m. it’s not quite as cute. Is Ambien, the twenty-ten Calgon? Ambien, take me away!

Life 101 – Global Girl Media

As the FIFA World Cup gets ready to “kick” off in South Africa, Global Girl Media is getting geared to go as well. The nonprofit was founded by media superwomen Amie Williams and Kamala Lopez (you may remember Lopez from her stint on Sesame Street as Maria’s cousin Mercedes) to help young women in low-income communities become more employable by training them in new media journalism. The girls have attended a training camp, and are now ready to start shooting video and writing for GGM’s blog about how the World Cup affects their communities. What makes this girl-power group even cooler? Their spokesperson is none other than Olympic gold medalist and soccer star Julie Foudy! For more on Global Girl Media and their latest adventures, check out this shout-out on Seventeen’s website. And become their fan on Facebook for up-to-the-minute updates from Soweto.

American Icons – John Wooden Dies

The sports world lost a major icon this week. John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach, died on Friday at 99. The coach became an American sports icon in his 27 years at UCLA as he took the Bruins through 10 national titles. He was the first person to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. This week, there’s a plethora of tributes and stories about the coach, but one of the most touching is ESPN essayist Rick Reilly’s memories of interviewing Wooden about his high school sweetheart and wife of over 50 years, Nell. It’s a nice read. Lakers or Celts fan, the country’s thoughts are with Los Angeles this week.

American Fun – Beard Championships

In case you missed it, this past weekend the World Beard and Moustache Championships took place in Bend, Oregon. There were four fantastic facial hair categories: 1) Best moustache; 2) Best partial beard (goatees, van dykes, sideburns, musketeers, etc.); 3) Best full beard; and 4) Freestyle. (Anything goes. Anything. Be creative.) By the “looks of this video, ” Freestyle wins the day.
By the way, I like this bearded group: BTUSA. In addition to more hair than a busy barber’s floor. They have nice membership rules: “The competition is open to everyone.” We need more groups who include everyone in the fun.

Talented Kids – Baby Gaga

This weekend I went to a local production of Annie, and as I watched the little orphans sing “It’s a Hard Knock Life,” I had a thought: how great it is that all around the country, talented adults volunteer in local community theater, so that kids can have the opportunity to stretch their wings and hone their talents. Along those lines, here’s a little Monday morning fun: Toddlers performing Lady Gaga’s Telephone. Forget lockets of hair and crying photos with Santa, these kids will have a music video keepsake to look back and remember.

American Icons – Sasha and Malia

We’ve all heard President Obama refer to his daughters, Sasha and Malia almost as many times as we’ve seen him pull that oh-so endearing “Change” face. New York Magazine has put together this hilarious slideshow of Obama referring to the girls’ clever antics, from Malia’s demands to “plug the hole, Daddy!”, and, when he received the Nobel Peace Prize in January, the girls’ reminders that it was also Bo‘s birthday. We all need someone to keep our egos in check, right? Happy weekend.

American Fun – Shrek McRecall

Collectors around the country are scratching their heads this morning. McDonald’s has recalled 12 million of its “Shrek”-themed drinking glasses because the toxic metal cadmium has been discovered in the painted design. So if people return them, don’t use them, will 25 years from now we be in ebay bidding wars for the things? All I’m sure of is I’m holding on tight to my Grimace, Hamburglar, Captain Crook, and Ronald set. They make the perfect cadmium-free container for a weekend cocktail.

Pop Culture Pop-Up – Sesame Street

This morning I woke up singing … and the question is: can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street
? It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Muppets, but Jim Henson‘s brilliant kids’ creation deserves an honorable mention, too. For 40 years, Sesame Street has been teaching ABCs and 123s, and keeping us laughing in the process. The Sesame Street crew was teaching kids to keep it green years before the movement built up mainstream steam, and who could forget Cookie Monster’s brilliant MC Hammer-inspired healthy foods rap? No matter how young or old, everyone can learn a thing or two from Sesame Street.

Rue – Thank you for being a friend

In memory of the sassy and vivacious Rue McClanahan, here’s a laugh, her fun interview with Dame Edna, confidant of the rich and famous.
Let’s shake our curves, and sing us some Golden Girls theme song.
Thank you for being a friend!
Traveled down the road and back again.
Your heart is true. You’re a pal and a confidant.

Rue, may Estelle and Bea greet you at the Golden Gates.
