American Fun – Mud Queen Coronation

Westland, Michigan is taking the concept of mud-wrestling to a whole new level with the annual Mud Day event, where they crown one lucky, muck-covered girl Mud Queen. These girls spent the day playing in the mud lake, which was created by mixing 20,000 gallons of water with 200 tons of topsoil. About 1,000 children each year show up to play in the mud lake. As swelteringly hot as it’s been in New York City, it’ll take more than high temps to get me in a mud lake, even if there’s a pretty crown involved. Gross.

Dinner Party Talk – The Candwich

Yuck on so many levels.
We’ve now reached a whole new funky fresh level of GROSS. Eater has the unbelievable, but true, story of The Candwich, a sandwich in a can that comes in three flavors: peanut butter and strawberry jam, peanut butter and grape jam, and, the most one that sends shivers down my spine: BBQ Chicken. But wait! There’s more. Plans for Pepperoni Pizza and French Toast Candwiches are in the works. The Candwich, of course, comes with its share of controversy. If anyone buys one, please tell us what exactly is the “Candy Surprise Inside.” Icky poo. No, thanks! I’ll just make a homemade PBJ and wrap it in a baggie. Here’s a funtastic musical recipe for peanut butter and jelly. Or, even better, check out the Peanut Butter Song from Inside out. “I’m peanut butter and you’re jelly and we’re so happy on our little piece of bread.” DEFINITELY worth a listen! Enjoy your uncanned dinner!

Life 101 – Braggin’ on Zappos

It is rare for customer service at any major retailer to be efficient and kind…but Zappos is both. After a recent transaction the retailer has gained a customer for life… me. The shoes I ordered were too small. I called Zappos to ask how to exchange. They sent me a return label via email and overnighted me a new pair…before I’d even sent back the old pair. A few days later I got a personal note in the mail from my customer service person, Michelle, which said, “Thank you for sharing your day with me.” I’ve learned that this kind of “put a smile in someone’s day” is company philosophy. Every customer service rep (hear this Verizon? Time Warner? AT&T?) should make Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh’s book Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose their go to guide. Zappos, I’ll be back.

Gossip! – The Internet is Over

Might as well trash my Macbook and iPhone, because according to Prince, the Internet is over. The pop star told the UK’s Daily Mirror that the Internet is like MTV-“At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated.” As for my now-outdated Macbook and iPhone (and the iPad…and iPhone 4…and all those other wonderful accessories), Prince has deemed digital gadgets “no good.” Seems a little hypocritical for someone whose Purple Rain video has gotten well over a million views on YouTube.

Gossip – Timberlake on Glee

Timberlake and Mr. Schuester - separated at birth?

For those of us already experiencing withdrawal since the season finale of Glee (I just finished it last night!), there’s chatter that Justin Timberlake may be joining the list of celebrities who will guest-star on the show’s 3rd season. The pop star is in talks to play the brother of teacher Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison). There’s an uncanny resemblance between the two (it must be the curly locks!) Also expected in the next season is British singer Leona Lewis. Who will be Bleeding Love?

Pet Fun – New Tricks

My dog Westminster and I are going to work on this new trick, so watch out Central Park! Wes loves his Frisbee, and often carries it all the way the the park. We’ve gotten it stuck in our fair share of trees, but that pooch has the right idea to get it down. I love this comment someone left: “Congratulations, your fence is now meaningless.” But I’m not sure if Wes would have enough self-restraint to follow orders like this smartie-pants dog does. This is a great trick, but when I saw this clip, I had the irresistible urge to just give the poor dog his ball!

Dinner Party Talk – 4th of July Follow-Up

I had a great time over the weekend doing all things American–from fireworks to grilling. Realized it’s never too late for a good 4th of July history parody, and this one got the giant history nerd inside me excited. Some clever fellow history buff has rewritten the lyrics to One Republic’s Apologize and given us Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration. There’s nothing better than reflecting on America’s independence with a hit pop song. Or maybe you’d rather listen to Elvis’s amazing American Trilogy. And jumping from history to the present, here’s an academic ranking of our 43 presidents. Presidental scholars were asked about their faves, and, lo and behold, FDR is #1 and you may be surprised by the worst…

American Fun – Fireworks!

It’s 4th of July weekend, and what better way to celebrate than with sparkly explosions of fire? It’s an American tradition, but the Chinese were the ones to first use fireworks to scare away evil spirits as early as the 7th century. 2010’s displays are probably a little more elaborate, especially those on this list of the best fireworks displays in the country (one, of course, being NYC’s Macy’s Fireworks Display.) Of course, if you can’t make it to one of these cities, you can always make your own fireworks…with a fire marshall present…or just not.
Everybody have a happy 4th and be safe!

American Fun – Food Talk

In honor of, well, being hungry, I came across these colorful maps of who eats what in New York City. Some very creative person has broken the boroughs down by the most common type of restaurant in each zip code. So this weekend, if you’re in the city craving, say, mexican sandwiches, you’ll know to head to Brooklyn. Personally, I’m thinking of moving to the green area of Queens labeled “desserts.”
And in other food news, the Nathan’s annual 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest is this weekend at Coney Island. No worries if you’re not in the city–the event will be broadcast on ESPN. Last year’s winner finished 68 hotdogs in 10 minutes. In other, other news: Pepto Bismal will be joining the list of sponsors for this year’s contest. Happy eating!

Dinner Party Talk – Adventures in Taxidermy

Last weekend I was at a restaurant with stuffed deer heads hanging on the wall. Fortunately, I was having a veggie burger. The heads did get the table talking about taxidermy. When most people think of taxidermy, they either think of creepy mad-scientist types stringing animal parts together, or hunter hobbyists immortalizing their prizes. Taxidermy began in the 1800s, when hunters began using the methods pioneered by leather tanners to preserve their trophies. The techniques didn’t take off until scientists and museums began using taxidermy to build anatomically accurate models of different animals and pose them in true-to-life and artistically arranged settings. To learn more about this freaky, yet fascinating art, check out Still Life by Melissa Milgrom. You never know when you might need a nice moose head to tie that room together.
