Life 101 – Public restrooms

Let’s face it-public restrooms are icky, but occasionally they are a necessary evil. My friend, Jane Brown, recently was on an errand and nature called, so she stopped at Macy’s. She sat down in the stall and heard a voice from the neighboring stall say: ‘Hi, how are you?’ Jane’s not the type to start a conversation in the restroom, but answered with embarrassment: ‘Doin’ just  fine!’ The other person says: ‘So what are you up to?’ Jane is thinking this is way bizarre, but answers: ‘Uhhh, I’m just sitting here…’  and quickly tries to finish business and get out of the bathroom. Then, she gets another question: ‘Can I come over?’ Sweet Jane decides she must end this conversation so curtly says, ‘No! I’m a little busy right now!’ She then hears her next stall neighbor say: ‘Listen, I’ll have to call you back. There’s an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions!!’ Oh, such is life 101.

Life 101 – Storycorps: Danny & Annie

Storycorps allows Americans of all backgrounds to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. In the past 7 years, it has collected and archived more than 30,000 interviews including the story of Danny & Annie. These two New Yorkers tell the story of their 27-year romance: “These remarkable Brooklynites personify the eloquence, grace, and poetry that can be found in the voices of everyday people when we take the time to listen.” I can’t decide which of Danny’s quotes is my favorite. Is it: “Being married is like a color television set, you never want to go back to black and white.” Or “The only thing I have to give you is a poor gift, and it’s myself.” Decide for yourself. It’s a MUST watch!

Holidays – National Waffle Day

Growing up, my mother used to make us breakfast for dinner, and waffles were always a favorite. And who’d have thunk it…Today is all about celebrating these childhood treats, in honor of the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. A great, fluffy waffle starts with a really simple recipe, like Alton Brown’s Basic Waffles. And here’s a very detailed video on making waffles. (All recipes should come with videos, in my opinion.) The obvious topper is maple syrup, but here’s a list of fun waffle sandwiches, and my friends at Good Housekeeping have a very grown-up Apple Cheddar Waffle Panini. Happy eating!

Dinner Party Talk – Egg Recall

The Great Egg Recall of 2010 (550 million eggs pulled from shelves because of a salmonella outbreak) has dominated the headlines for the last few days. Yesterday, the source of the tainted eggs was identified: Wright County Egg Co. and Hillandale Farms in Iowa. Unfortunate, because just one large egg has only 70 calories and provides 13 essential nutrients like vitamin D and folate. For us vegetarians, they’re a great source of protein. So I’m not letting the recall get me down. But if you’re really nervous, you can always try an egg cream! The famous New York fizzy chocolate drink is delicious and refreshing and, guess what, has no eggs. Me, I’ll take my eggs salmonella-free and hard-boiled, thanks.

Life 101 – Moments

This is a wow. Filmmakers Will Hoffman, Daniel Mercadante, and Julius Metoyer III give us a short film about Moments. Certainly Life 101 and definitely worth a look! How do you define a moment? Watching this made me realize how special and unique each day is–with each moment, in its ups and downs, with its good and bad…. Um, even when I miss my bus.

What I’m Doing – Apple Picking

I just returned from my home state of South Carolina where I went to my cousin’s wedding. (Congrats Natalie & Patrick!) I got to spend time with my octogenarian grandparents and we reminisced about many things, including one of my favorite childhood adventures, apple picking! My grandmother always made a point of taking us to her favorite orchard for a day of tree climbing and apple picking. Here’s a fun apple picking game that will test your coordination. Now, I’m going out to my farm and picking a granny smith. Put on your “to do” list a day of apple picking. You’ll thank me.

American Fun – Alligator Egg Hatching Festival

First, I wake up to news that an alligator has been spotted in New York City! Where? Parked under a blue Datsun in Queens, of course! (What urban legend?!) And then I find out I’m having to miss the 5th Annual Alligator Egg Hatching Festival in Palmdale, Florida! If you’re ever at Florida and not visiting the mouse house, perhaps you want to stop by Gatorama, where they have the largest collection of crocodiles and alligators on the planet. Um, scary! One thing I can’t help but noticing: Doesn’t that thing look just like a mini-me dinosaur?! Like these spotted in San Antonio, Texas!

Gossip! – American Apparel financial woes

Looks like people are getting tired of paying upwards of 20 bucks for sheer cotton t-shirts. According to the Huffington Post, bankruptcy is a real possibility for American Apparel. The Los Angeles-based company has reported a series of quarterly losses and is in the process of renegotiating its credit agreement (read: bad). I’m all for their sweatshop-free practices, but how about raising cash by throwing a massive staying-in-business sale!

Life 101 – The Chinese Beat It

I just read that China has overtaken Japan to become the second leading world economy. (After, of course, the #1 good old U.S. of A.) I’m no economist, but I am a darn good spotter of clever. I’ve been jamming this rainy morning to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” via the Chinese Red Army. It’s pretty darn brilliant. How does someone wake up and go, “Hey, I’ve got an idea! Why don’t I edit a “Beat It” video featuring the Chinese Red Army”? I won’t ask twice. I’ve got work to do. Maybe I’ll do “Somewhere over the Rainbow” on my garage sale ukulele. Nah, it’s been done, and I could never do it as clever as this. Happy Monday, people. Smile!
