Dinner Party Talk – Emmys

I believe I can sum up last night’s 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards in a few short words (unlike Al Pacino’s acceptance speech for best lead actor in a miniseries. NBC told him to wrap it up!). Here we go: Jimmy Fallon overdid the singing routines, Betty White was there (of course), Modern Family won basically everything and Lost lost. The best part of the entire night was the Glee-esque opening, featuring a bunch of Glee cast members and myriad TV stars, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm and Mr. Fallon. Watch it here, and you too can appreciate the glory that is Glee and Bruce Stringsteen.

Life 101 – End of Summer Bubbles

There are a few things I think everyone should do before summer ends.
1) Make fresh lemonade.
2) Eat a homegrown tomato.
3) Take a ride on something where you can feel the wind in your hair (rollercoaster, convertible, bike)
4) Stick at least your toes in the water.
5) And blow some giant bubbles on a beach! I ordered mine here.
Happy end of summer.

Life 101 – Ever have a bad day?

After you watch “This is My Lucky Day“, you’ll realize that the difference between a good day and bad day can be a split second! But if you’re ever having a stinker of a day, here’s something for you: either find something to laugh at or sing a happy little ditty. Mine is “High Hopes.” (Frank Sinatra is famous for it, but my favorite isLaverne & Shirley’s version. Those girls could always turn a frown upside down! Enjoy your day.

Pet Fun – Pets with Twitter

I’m not sure if my dog Wes has anything he wants to share with the Twitter world (though he really loves his squeaky turtle toy), but these pets have lots to say. Pet Twitters have become more and more popular in the last year, and I came across this fantastic list of pets with Twitter. Medlar the snapping turtle, for example, shares turtle news via his Twitter. And my personal favorite is Basil Orton, a cranky Harlequin Macaw who hates his cage. “Well they have built an outside exercise cage. Now it’s really like prison,” he tweeted recently. I now know why the caged bird Tweets.

Dinner Party Talk – Carlashes

Drivers beware! A new trend is driving down the block: Carlashes, the crystal eyeliner and lashes for your headlights. Guaranteed to “throw rainbows in the sun!” My ’67 Mustang Convertible would drive off a cliff if I tried to affix these things, but hey, if Brooke Shields can make her lashes thicker with Latisse you can make your Honda feel better about its lack of bling. Side effects of Latisse: darkening of the eyelid skin…and brown iris pigmentation…likely to be permanent. Only known side effects of Carlashes are the strange looks you’ll get at every stoplight. Order your pair of Carlashes here!

Pet Fun – Dog and Cat Love

Okay America, enough with the hate! On Tuesday night, Ahmed Sharif, a New York City cab driver, was allegedly asked if he was a Muslim and then stabbed by passenger Michael Enright, a 21-year-old film student. Enright has been charged with attempted murder as a hate crime. Sharif said today that he pleaded with his attacker not to kill him. And I plead with you, let’s stop the hate-filled nonsense that has sprouted in this country. Let’s you and I make a deal to do what we can each day to encourage harmony. And if you need sweet inspiration: let these two natural born opposites be an example for us all!

American Fun – Funny Horse Names

Not only are racehorses known for their, well, racing abilities, but they’ve also got some of the most creative names. These two definitely come in first for theirs: ‘My Wife Knows Everything’ and ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know.’ The announcer at this recent race in New Jersey had some pretty interesting calls to make as these horses were neck-in-neck. In the end, ‘My Wife Knows Everything’ won the race, a relief to wives everywhere. Ironically though, the two horses are owned by the same man… I want to know the wife!

American Fun – Stairway to Stardom

I’m twenty years late to the party, but I’ve just discovered the joys of the 1980s New York City public-access television show, “Stairway to Stardom.” It is an amateur talent show that is either the Gong Show sequel or the American Idol prequel. It also reminds me of the “talent” show I performed in my garage at about the same time. It’s a blurry memory, but I do remember dancing to Chaka Khan’s “I Feel for You.” Thankfully, that’s not on video. If it were, you’d feel for me!

Holidays – National Dog Day

Take a moment and celebrate your furry best friend (or your neighbor’s or your sister’s or your boss’s) because today is National Dog Day. If you already have a pooch, give him an extra walk or treat today, and if you don’t, check out the ASPCA’s dog adoption site to find a pup in need near you. Big dogs, little dogs, dogs that drink out of the toilet–they all deserve a great, healthy life.

Gossip! – Dancing with the Stars

BREAKING: E! Online is reporting that Bristol Palin has joined the cast of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ along with US Weekly’s headline that David Hasselhoff has signed on. They’ll join Kirstie Alley, the Situation (a.k.a. “The $5 Million Man”), and Audrina Patridge. Also, rumored is Michael Bolton and Lindsay Lohan, but my favorite of all whispers, however, is that Mrs. Brady, Florence Henderson, might join the hoofers. I love me some Brady Bunch.
