It was a scary weekend at the new Meadowlands stadium when two players in two different games were seriously injured on the same field. Rutgers’ defensive tackle Eric LaGrand suffered a severe spinal cord injury during Saturday’s game against Army and is currently paralyzed from the neck down. A recovery is possible, and he and his family are hopeful. Also, Lions linebacker Zach Follett suffered a similarly serious injury and had to be taken off the field in a stretcher and hospitalized. Keep these guys in your thoughts this week!

Halloween. It’s not just for kids anymore! 65% of dog owners (there are 77.5 million pet dogs in America) say they will be including dogs in their Halloween plans and 45% of those say the dogs will resent the costumes. Here’s for your enjoyment are 35 pugs in costume. Guaranteed for a laugh, even though some of the pugs look less than thrilled. Westminster is going in drag. Are you dressing up your pet?
Dinner Party Talk – For Your Weekend

Serving up a plateful of conversation.
Awkward family reunion! According to research done by Ancestry.com, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are 10th cousins through an ancestor named John Smith. Stranger still, Obama is also 10th cousins (once removed) with Rush Limbaugh.
“I like it on the kitchen table.” Female Facebook friends have been posting “I like it on…” status updates. After much research, I’ve discovered it’s in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and where they keep their purses. What will men do for prostate cancer awareness?
Proving the impossible. An armless pianist who plays with his toes has won China’s version of the television talent show, China’s Got Talent. His performance of “You’re Beautiful,” singing and using his feet to play the piano, is a must watch!
Streaking for the president: Hoping to meet terms of a $1 million challenge, a formerly homeless man from Staten Island stripped off his clothes and streaked just 40 feet from Obama.
Everybody’s getting naked! ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue hit stands with athletes in their full glory and starlet Kim Kardashian and all her va-va-voom is on the cover of W magazine.
Now, eat your dinner!

Life 101 – Nature Boy
Allison Williams (daughter of NBC anchor Brian Williams) stars in this gorgeous music video, singing a mix of the Mad Men theme song and “Nature Boy,” which is one of my favorites… not only because it was a key song in the Top 5 fantastic film Moulin Rouge, but because of the line: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” (And that fits with my “all good things week.”) Oh, and artists note: this video is all filmed in one long shot and the entire performance was recorded live — “no cuts, dubbing, lip-syncing or auto-tuning.” Take that fakers!
Dinner Party Talk – Good people places & things

Simple idea. Pass along only good things this week.
Life 101 – Charity and goodness
All this week to counter the onslaught of the negativity of politics, I’m running with things that prove people ARE good. I encourage you to support “Running for James,” a race organized in my home state of South Carolina to benefit high school senior James Harrelson. On the first day of this school year, James came home with terrible back pain. Within hours he was paralyzed from chest down with no use of his core muscles. James has been diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis and is being treated at Sheppard Center in Atlanta, GA. You can support the run right now from your desktop and help James and his family in this time of need.
Life 101 – Message from Jack
In light of all of the recent violence and political virulence against gays, comes this from my friend Jack on National Coming Out day. It is a message for us all. Do humanity a favor and give 31 seconds to watch. I promise it will make your heart grow a few sizes and proved to me that with the upcoming generation, there is hope for a kinder world. Thanks Jack! You are a blessing.
