American Fun – Pumpkin drop

Here’s a sport I’ve never seen before, but judging from the crowd gathered to watch, it’ll be one we’ll see again. It’s a Halloween trick unlike any other… and as one Youtube commenter wrote: “So American.” Watch as a 1,200 pound pumpkin (who knew there was such a thing?) is dropped on an old Pontiac. It’s crushing. And funny. (Note the wipers.) Do NOT try this in your driveway. But if you run across pumpkin seeds, try my grandma’s recipe: lightly toast in the oven with a little salt, olive oil and a sprinkle of paprika. A crunchy, yummy, healthy seasonal snack.

Gossip! – Cowboy’s Tony Romo out?

Romo chats with Eli Manning after Monday night's heartbreaking game.

Something inside all Dallas Cowboys fans died a little last night when the Boys not only lost the game (to the Giants, 35-41), but also might lose star quarterback Tony Romo for the rest of the season. He took a hard hit during the second quarter and walked off the field. And the news wasn’t good–medics are saying Romo broke his left collarbone and might need surgery. Tough news for a team who’s hosting the Super Bowl in their spanking new stadium, but might have lost the change to play in it. Jon Kitna, the second-string QB has stepped in to take Romo’s place. Last night was the first time he’d played an actual down in a year. I’m posting this because my assistant, a die-hard Cowboys fan, spent the last half of the game in a fetal position on her living room rug.

Life 101 – Talking Animals

Here’s a good giggle for you. Walk on the Wild Side, currently airing on BBC One, takes a gander at what animals might say as they go about their life. There’s something about the English accent that takes it over the top. You have to watch it just to see two giraffes have a marital fight. Ouch.

Gossip! – Monday Morning Quarterback

As players get stronger and equipment gets better, hits in the NFL are getting more and more dangerous.

In a letter to players, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league will be tightening rules on hits and plays in the wake of last week’s dangerous injuries. The first six weeks of football season has seen 46 concussions and neck injuries, almost twice as many as last year. Will we see more penalties and fines during Week 7? In other news, underdog team Cleveland Browns beat Drew Brees and the Saints, 30-17. Pretty good for a rookie quarterback against a Super Bowl winning team. Patriots almost lost to the San Diego Chargers, 23-20, and everybody got ready to stage protests against Belichick’s playcalls, like we all did last year. Brett Favre returned to Green Bay, only to lose, 28-24. And keep tonight open, because the Giants are at Cowboys for a major rivalry game.

Dinner Party Talk – For your weekend

Serving up a plateful of conversation.

If you want to see titillating and tasteless, pick up a copy of this month’s GQ. Photographer Terry Richardson brings to life high school fantasies in a photoshoot featuring Glee’s Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, and Cory Monteith. It makes me feel dirty.
Speaking of dirty. Visited my grandparents this week for my Pop’s 90th birthday. I noted my grandmother loves her some hand sanitizer. A new survey reports that people think hand sanitizer works for an hour or more. Um, it only protects for two minutes. “The best germicidal thing you can do is wash with soap and water,” says a doc.
If you see something, say something. This week the jury convicted the so-called “Newburgh 4” for plotting to bomb synagogues in New York and shoot down military planes. The four men were arrested in Newburgh, which has a startling poverty rate of almost 30%. Poor, however, is no excuse for terror. The four face life sentences.
Speaking of courts. The federal judge, who ruled “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” unconstitutional, refused to allow the government’s stay request and military recruiters were told by the Pentagon to begin enlisting openly gay people. Former lieutenant Dan Choi, one of the most outspoken critics of DADT, went to the Times Square recruiting station to sign up for the Marines. He was denied. Not because he’s gay, but because he’s too old. Ouch.
Speaking of old. Two TV parents died this week. Barbara Billingsley, a.k.a. June Cleaver, died at her home in Santa Monica, and Tom Bosley, Happy Days’ model dad and hardware store owner Howard Cunningham, died at 83. In their honor, this weekend let’s all buy something at our local hardware store and then go home and vacuum in our pearls.
Now, eat your dinner!

Pet Fun – Shake-to-Dry Ratio

Smaller dogs shake at a frequency of 4.3 Hz.

A team of scientists got together to discover the answer to one of life’s burning questions: How fast must dogs shake to get dry? If you’ve ever given a furry animal a bath and then stood around for approximately one second, you’re familiar with the process, which, for a Labrador, occurs at a frequency of 4.3 Hz. The scientists used a tracker placed on the wet dog’s fur to measure how fast their skin moves during the shaking-dry process. Even if all the scientific mumbo jumbo passes you by, you can still watch the video of cute furry animals (and a bear!) shaking dry in slow motion to “Hound Dog.”
