Not to be outdone by the First Lady, I planted a kitchen garden at Edgewater Farm this year. At left, some of the bounty I just picked this week. (I hope the great Roscoe Betsill will be proud of my food styling.) Here’s an easy idea that brought a smile to some faces: I packed up my harvest and Fedexed it to my grandparents in South Carolina. They just left me a message, absolutely thrilled at what I grew and my grandmother says she’s making fried eggplant this weekend. Hey, did you know that Thomas Jefferson is largely responsible for some of our best agriculture and the way we grow food? White House assistant chef Sam Kass said, “When his ambassadors would go out all over the world, he would ask them to bring back seeds.” Now, that’s forward thinking. But just try to get that through that today through the Department of Homeland Security!
Take a video tour of Michelle Obama’s White House Kitchen Garden.
