Animal fun – The Zedonk

A Zedonk is cuteness defined.

You’re looking at a Zedonk… an adorable cross between a donkey and a zebra. She’s becoming a star attraction at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Dahlonega, Georgia after being born there about a week ago. She has black stripes that she gets from her zebra father and a great ass she gets from her donkey mother. (But that’s just my opinion!)
C.W. Wathen, the preserve’s founder, said the foal has a zebra’s instincts, sitting up to stay alert for predators rather than lying on her side. Awww. I’m in love.

Gossip! – Betty White is the new black

Betty White is the new black.

Come fall, I’m wearing Betty. Yep, Betty White is branching out into fashion. Women’s Wear Daily is saying the uber-star is launching a line of T-shirts and hoodies in August featuring her smiling face. Targeting the digital generation, the $48 hoodies (what a bargain!) feature washable earbuds and a jack to plug into iPods. Portions of sales will go to the Morris Animal Foundation, an animal health organization dear to Betty’s sweet heart. Betty, you are the face of twenty-ten.

Westminster recently asked me if he could go to England. I thought it might be to sniff out the Abbey, but then I heard about this: a doggone smart entrepreneur in England is serving up doggie ice cream in flavors to make you bark. Chicken flavored ice cream served in a wafer cone with a crunchy canine biscuit bone topper. Mmmm, chicken ice cream. I think I’ll go with the K-9 Cookie Crunch.

Turtles don't have lips.

Koopa the turtle is going places. Do your day a favor and listen as Koopa belts out some Etta James. He’s got lip synching down, even though turtles don’t have any lips. According to finger-on-the-pulse site Buzzfeed, amateur herpetologists know Koopa the Box Turtle as the turtle who paints. (Some are for sale on ebay and I’d proudly have any of them on my wall!) I visited Koopa’s site Turtlekiss and have decided I’m in love.

Pet Fun – Quizno’s Commercial

Not sure why the Mad Men at Quizno’s decided that cute disembodied kitten faces will make you want to eat more foot-long subs, but this new commercial most definitely does not do it for me. I’d much rather watch this surprised kitten or these vacuum-riding kittens. Add a little cute to your day, but hold the salami and cheddar.

Polar Bears love watermelon too!

July is National Watermelon Month, so proclaimed by Congress. Did you know that the United States produces 4,200,000,000 pounds of watermelon annually and it’s grown in 49 States? (I’m guessing Alaska is stuck on wolf hunting.) Read the House Proclamation here. Or enjoy these darn cute pictures of polar bears eating watermelon.
This weekend I’m making vivacious Paula Deen’s Watermelon Salad with Mint Leaves. Now, that’s a party in your mouth, y’all!

Pet Fun – New Tricks

My dog Westminster and I are going to work on this new trick, so watch out Central Park! Wes loves his Frisbee, and often carries it all the way the the park. We’ve gotten it stuck in our fair share of trees, but that pooch has the right idea to get it down. I love this comment someone left: “Congratulations, your fence is now meaningless.” But I’m not sure if Wes would have enough self-restraint to follow orders like this smartie-pants dog does. This is a great trick, but when I saw this clip, I had the irresistible urge to just give the poor dog his ball!

Pet Fun – World’s Ugliest Dog

Princess Abby, a hunchback, one-eyed chihuahua was declared the World’s Ugliest Dog this weekend at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California. Her two-legged friend, Kathleen Francis, took home $1,600 in prize money and Princess Abby took home a shiny blue ribbon. The contest is part of a dog lover’s festival, which celebrated all pups (not just the ugly ones!). Dogs attended a cuisine party with organic dog food chef Mary Duffy, and while their dogs chowed down, the owners could go to seminars on adoption and training. Even cooler, most of the dog day events were sponsored by the local branch of the Humane Society. Happily, Princess Abby remains unfazed. Dogs are not worried about appearance.
