In a recent post, I discussed earworms. Several people wrote to suggest songs that were earworms… And then I found this: A mash-up of all the Top 25 hits of 2009. I have listened to it non-stop since yesterday. If this doesn’t get you happy and excited for the weekend, may I suggest a two martini lunch. Put on your dancing shoes people. It’s the weekend.

I’m not sure what to say about this latest wine drinking aid. I almost decided to just present it without comment and tell you to go to Amazon and order yourself two. But what I NEED to know is why not just grab the bottle and a straw and call it a day? I will also point out that customers who bought this item on Amazon, also bought the beer glass that holds 5 beers and the Obama Chia Pet Planter.
You can’t make this stuff up. Or rather you can… and then sell it to America! You know you need a Bill Clinton corkscrew.

American Fun – Fireworks!

It’s 4th of July weekend, and what better way to celebrate than with sparkly explosions of fire? It’s an American tradition, but the Chinese were the ones to first use fireworks to scare away evil spirits as early as the 7th century. 2010′s displays are probably a little more elaborate, especially those on this list of the best fireworks displays in the country (one, of course, being NYC’s Macy’s Fireworks Display.) Of course, if you can’t make it to one of these cities, you can always make your own fireworks…with a fire marshall present…or just not.

American Fun – Night at the Museum Sleepover

If you’ve ever had that weird nightmare where you get lost in the Natural History Museum and they lock up for the night, and then you have to spend the night with the giant blue whale (oh, that’s just me?)… it can now become a reality. Only in a not-scary, kid-friendly way. With the Night at the Museum Sleepover program, kids can spend the night at the museum, and participate in all kinds of fun activities like tours, movies and snacktime in the food court. At $129, it’s way cheaper than an NYC hotel room. Too bad you have to be under 13 to participate!

Gossip – Quiet Hero party

The Polish Consulate just hosted a book signing for Quiet Hero, my new book with Rita Cosby. Pictures from the night are on James Edstrom’s great site Times Square Gossip-which celebrates stories from “the center of the world.” The wonderful Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, Poland’s Consul General in NY, threw the standing room only party for Rita and her father Richard at the De Lamar Mansion. It was packed with lots of notables. If you haven’t gotten a copy of Quiet Hero, please do. I’m incredibly proud of it. Sen. John McCain said: “Rita’s story is one that will touch every family… A loving, poignant tribute to her POW father and freedom.”

Dinner Party Talk – Oops Upside Your Head Dance

I’m guessing group dances that protect at least a small shred of your dignity, like the Electric Slide or the Cotton Eyed Joe, went out in the nineties, because this incredibly awkward “dance” to the song “Oops Upside Your Head” is what people are apparently doing now. You sit on the floor, in a line, and alternatively smack the floor, clap and pat the back of the person in front of you. Um, a thought: there’s a reason bars in NYC are so dark. Have you ever seen the floor?! Hence, I’ll call the dance, The Icky Poo.

American Fun – Summer Solstice

June 21 (or 20, for argument’s sake) marks the summer solstice, the day when the sun is closest to the Northern hemisphere. Astrologically, it’s the first day of summer, and it’s also the longest day of the year. The Ancient Greeks would celebrate with a variety of sun-centered rituals, but here’s how I’m celebrating this evening: rooftop, sunglasses and a cold glass of something fruity. Maybe a twist on a classic, like Better Homes and Garden’s blackberry sangria, or one of their lemonade ideas. And Good Housekeeping has some boxed white wines that are perfect for summer (and actually good!). Of course, it isn’t summer in the south (my motherland) without sweet tea. Boil a couple of Lipton tea bags in a small pot of water, mix with clear, warm water to fill a large pitcher and add sugar to taste (I like about 2 cups). Be sure to stir the sugar constantly until totally dissolved. Enjoy with grandma and a porch swing. Happy summer!

Gossip! – Devo’s Cat Listening Party

Few things make me happier than Devo’s wonderfully catchy and equally cheesy “Whip It“. But the 80′s techno band, headed by Mark Mothersbaugh, has topped themselves. To celebrate the release of their new album, “Something for Everybody”, the producers held a listening party–for cats. The entire thing was livestreamed earlier this week, but you can watch the video here. Most of the cats are just doing normal cat things (sniffing, sitting), but I think the orange one may start breakdancing if you watch long enough. Thank you Devo, for being quirky and fabulous.

American Fun – Wedding Season

Shine your shoes and print out that wedding registry (before somebody else gets them the giant salad utensils). It’s June, and it’s officially wedding season. Even if you’re not the one tying the knot this summer, wedding season has something to offer everyone.

This bride had all 110 of her dance students as her bridesmaids! A Guinness Book of World Record! They did not dance to Chris Brown.

I’m loving this gorgeous Indian wedding from Better Home and Gardens.

Again, no Chris Brown. Thank goodness.

Pet Fun – Sydney Dog Concert

From one of my favorite New York performance artists, Laurie Anderson, and her rock legend hubby Lou Reed comes the single greatest concert ever. Pooches of all sizes put their paws together in Sydney last weekend for–you guessed it (or maybe you didn’t)–a dog concert. Anderson describes the 20-minute piece she wrote for the pups as “an inter-species social gathering on a scale never seen before in Australia.” New York City, it’s time for a dog concert. Who’s going to sign my petition? To get you and your four-legged friend in the mood, here’s who we’re getting to do backup vocals.
