Westminster, illustrator Paul Heath & I will be center court at the Palisades Center mall atop a Sleep Number Bed this Saturday, June 18, 1 – 4 pm, honoring canine search-and-rescue teams who worked at the 9/11 sites. In addition to a reading of The Bedtime Book for Dogs, we’ll play my new doggie game show JePAWdy.™ and introduce the crowd to real SAR dogs and their handlers from the Ramapo Rescue Dog Association. Barnes & Noble will be on hand to sell books and if you bring a photo of your dog Paul will draw a sketch for a $30 donation benefiting the 9/11 canine search and rescue teams.

For those of you in the NYC area, I will be appearing at the Clinton Book Shop from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Find out more about the event here. As a special treat, I’ll be joined by Dorado and Ursa, two certified therapy dogs who love to be read to, and illustrator Paul Heath who’ll have markers in hand. And on Sunday, June 11, at 2 p.m. we’ll be at the Kingston, New York Barnes & Noble with Westminster and will have fun and games for all. Check it out. Then, next Saturday, June 18, we’ll be center court at the Palisade’s Center Mall playing my doggie game show JePAWdy.™ I’ll also read to Westminster and dogs from the Ramapo Rescue Dog Association (while in my PJ’s on a Sleep Number Store bed decorated by USA Dog Shop!) The event will benefit the fantastic Tails of Hope Foundation and its 9/11 rescue dog tribute. For more information, look here!

Oh! Oh! Oprah! You are amazing. Watch her latest and greatest giveaway during her “Ultimate Favorite Things” spectacular. I’ll let the cat out of the bag and tell you it’s a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle… but you just have to watch to see the audience’s reaction. Oh, Oprah. Thanks for the inspiration.

Today, Oprah dances out with John Travolta to begin her show’s last and final year. Though she’ll continue making life-inspiring television at her OWN network (launching in early 2011), it’s the O Show’s last hurrah. During her years on TV, Oprah has been our psychological guinea pig, a living canvas, and America’s life coach. In honor of Oprah’s 25th and final season, why don’t you go Oprahfy yourself? I did. Barack Obama did!

Just got back from the post office, where I was overnighting another box of veggies to my octogenarian grandparents in South Carolina. When the postal clerk asked me: “Does your package contain anything liquid, perishable, fragile or potentially hazardous?” I looked her in the eye and said, “no.” My grandma wants her tomatoes! I just researched my crime in U.S. Postal Regulations: “Fresh fruits and vegetables are nonmailable unless presented in a dry (not dried) condition. Other perishable foods that are capable of easily decomposing or that cannot reach their destination without spoiling are nonmailable. Packaging must be strong and securely sealed as required in DMM 601.1–8.” I’m breaking the law! I may be arrested! Will I spend (13 days) with Lindsay? I’m going to dare fate and try it again. I’ll send a box of organic tomatoes to the first person who writes to tell me their favorite tomato dish.

Life 101 – Book excerpt

Just found out Simon & Schuster has posted an excerpt (Chapter 1) from Quiet Hero: Secrets of My Father’s Past, my new book with Rita Cosby. While working on the book, I had the pleasure of getting to know Rita’s 84-year-old dad Richard and taking the trip back to Poland with him (his first visit there since the Nazi’s took him prisoner 65 years before). His story is riveting. His life is inspiring. I’m running 3 miles a day because her dad, a lifelong runner, told me, “There’s always an excuse NOT to do something. Don’t fall prey to excuses.” Words to live by. Enjoy the chapter, I’m headed out for a run.

Working away on my upcoming book for dogs and want to include YOUR dog in the fun. Artist Paul Heath will immortalize a select bunch of furry friends (like Labradors Teddy & Winston, at left) to be included in the book. All you have to do is send me a photo of your dog.
Send photos as a comment or email, and spread the word on Facebook.
