Just found out Simon & Schuster has posted an excerpt (Chapter 1) from Quiet Hero: Secrets of My Father’s Past, my new book with Rita Cosby. While working on the book, I had the pleasure of getting to know Rita’s 84-year-old dad Richard and taking the trip back to Poland with him (his first visit there since the Nazi’s took him prisoner 65 years before). His story is riveting. His life is inspiring. I’m running 3 miles a day because her dad, a lifelong runner, told me, “There’s always an excuse NOT to do something. Don’t fall prey to excuses.” Words to live by. Enjoy the chapter, I’m headed out for a run.

American Fun – Your Dog Here!

Working away on my upcoming book for dogs and want to include YOUR dog in the fun. Artist Paul Heath will immortalize a select bunch of furry friends (like Labradors Teddy & Winston, at left) to be included in the book. All you have to do is send me a photo of your dog.
Send photos as a comment or email, and spread the word on Facebook.
Here’s to dogs, as Josh Billings described, “the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself!”

OLD SIGNS are one of my favorite garage sale finds. Was cleaning out the cottage this weekend and thought I’d share this vintage Pepsi sign I scored and remind you to vote for The Rosendale Theater Collective to receive the $50,000 grant. Pepsi had the good idea that rather than spending all their dough on Superbowl ads to give it as grants to local community pet projects. Results are this Friday and we’re in the Top 10! We need 3000 votes a day, but the Rosendale Theater (operating since 1949!) will be preserved with this grant money. Please take a minute and vote.

There aren’t many family run, single-screen movie theaters left in America… but there’s one in Rosendale, New York (where I had my two restaurants), a great old mining town with an amazing theater. A group called the The Rosendale Theatre Collective has formed to save the theater and is in the running for a $50K Pepsi Refresh grant! If they win, they will have raised enough to buy the Rosendale Theatre, a jewel, one of the last single-screen, family-run movie theaters in the country. It’s simple, whoever gets the most votes wins the grant. Please vote at HERE. (And you can vote everyday!) Please do… and then drink a Pepsi!

My favorite product is something that just about everyone is familiar with — ziploc bags. But beyond the standard household uses, they’re my go-to travel accessory.
