Holidays – Groundhog!

Happy (?) Groundhog’s Day, the day Punxsutawney Phil climbs out of his burrow in Pennsylvania at 7:20 a.m. in front of a crowd of 40,000 visitors to predict whether winter will “end” early. Today, he scurried back inside, indicating we’ve got another 6 weeks. But, um, he’s accurate only 39% of the time, which means he’s running neck and neck with meteorologists. Here’s my Groundhog’s Day predictions: It’s always my friend Karen’s birthday. (Happy birthday, Karen!) AND it is my day to announce to the groundhogs who have declared my barn their condo that “you will be evicted in 6 weeks!” So, you better start packing.

2011 – Oh, what a year!

Ho ho ho! I don’t know about you, but I felt 2011 was the year of work work work…
Here’s hoping the last two weeks are filled with FUN for you and yours. Look out New York, Westminster got his driver’s license today and he’s already barking at me to let him drive the Mustang. The site MyPetDMV fell in love with The Bedtime Book for Dogs and voila, Westminster is a certified “driver.” So cute! Get your cat, dog, or parakeet one.

Life 101 – Special Delivery

When I was a little kid, I always loved running to the mailbox. It was the days before Facebook, and I had pen pals all over the country. (Do kids still have pen pals?!) These days, the mail generally means one thing: bills.

But when the UPS truck rumbles down the driveway, it generally means something exciting, perhaps a little present I bought myself or a copy of The Bedtime Book for Dogs for Westminster to pawtograph.

Though neither of those things is why Wes runs to the truck. He thinks of it as “The Treat Truck” thanks to our fabulous UPS driver Meg Smith. (Look at him beg.) She has treats for all her “customers.” Now, that’s what Westminster calls good service.

Holidays – Fourth of July

It’s July 4th, the day we Americans celebrate freedom and independence with barbecues, fireworks, and drinking a lot* of beer. (*Independence Day is the day the most alcohol is consumed in the U.S.A.) But just so we’re all clear, King George thought we Americans were revolting. By the way, how much do you know about America? Do you, for example, know where the Declaration of Independence was signed? Well, I’ll tell you… On the bottom!
Salute a soldier. Here’s an idea to add some red, white and blue to your barbeque: While your guests are drinking all your beer, bring out some stationery and ask them to write a letter to the troops. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Debra Alfarone and her AltSide segment on New York City’s PIX11 Morning News. It’s a fun & clever interview with notables inside her VW Bug as she moves it back and forth to accommodate street sweepers. I’ve ridden along at Valentine’s and Christmas. But today, Westminster got to drive with us. And we discovered is that he loves Debra’s car too! Check it out! Wonderful host Sukanya Krishnan said, “We love him and we love his dog. If your child has issues reading out loud, it helps them with their confidence.” And WonderWeatherWoman Linda Church says she tells her dog everything! Wes & I love that people are saying The Bedtime Book for Dogs is the perfect gift! Bark about it to your friends!

Life 101 – Coffee anyone?

Pet fun – Letter to Wes

Westminster is now getting fan letters… like this one today:
Dear Wes,
Please tell your Dad that my Mom was so excited when The Bedtime Book for Dogs arrived. She acted like it was Christmas morning. As soon as she opened it she said, “we can’t wait, we have to read it now”. So we immediately sat down together. I was so eager to hear about our surprise that I was grinning ear-to-ear. She oohed and aahed all over the drawings of the dogs and said, “Paul really knows how to capture their expressions”!
Mom began reading the book and said, “Come”, but I was already there so I wagged my tail and smiled. Then she said, “stay” so I did. I wanted to hear more. Mom read, “treat”. Wow did that make my ears stand up. She turned the page and read, “good dog” and I licked her and she started to laugh and said something about this book really works!
Thanks Wes for inspiring your dad to write the first ever book for dogs. I hope we get to read it every night. I love The Bedtime Book for Dogs and give it my enthusiastic lick of approval!

What I’m Doing – Palisades Center Mall

Westminster, illustrator Paul Heath & I will be center court at the Palisades Center mall atop a Sleep Number Bed this Saturday, June 18, 1 – 4 pm, honoring canine search-and-rescue teams who worked at the 9/11 sites. In addition to a reading of The Bedtime Book for Dogs, we’ll play my new doggie game show JePAWdy.™ and introduce the crowd to real SAR dogs and their handlers from the Ramapo Rescue Dog Association. Barnes & Noble will be on hand to sell books and if you bring a photo of your dog Paul will draw a sketch for a $30 donation benefiting the 9/11 canine search and rescue teams.

What I’m Doing – Book Signings

For those of you in the NYC area, I will be appearing at the Clinton Book Shop from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Find out more about the event here. As a special treat, I’ll be joined by Dorado and Ursa, two certified therapy dogs who love to be read to, and illustrator Paul Heath who’ll have markers in hand. And on Sunday, June 11, at 2 p.m. we’ll be at the Kingston, New York Barnes & Noble with Westminster and will have fun and games for all. Check it out. Then, next Saturday, June 18, we’ll be center court at the Palisade’s Center Mall playing my doggie game show JePAWdy.™ I’ll also read to Westminster and dogs from the Ramapo Rescue Dog Association (while in my PJ’s on a Sleep Number Store bed decorated by USA Dog Shop!)
